A question I asked last week about my car's check engine light ended up costing me $400

Last week, I posted here asking what a P0420 code could mean for my 2010 Honda Civic. I got a bunch of guesses, from a cheap O2 sensor to a loose gas cap. I tried the easy stuff first, but the light stayed on. Took it to a shop in Asheville yesterday, and they said the catalytic converter was shot. The quote was $400 for the part alone. I wish I'd asked for more specific diagnostic steps instead of just possible causes. Has anyone else had a simple question lead to a much bigger, more expensive fix than you expected?

Honestly, that P0420 code is a real pain because it can mean so many things. I'd get a second opinion before replacing the cat, maybe from a shop that does free code checks. Sometimes a cheap downstream O2 sensor can trick the computer and fix it for way less than $400.

$400 just for the part is brutal.
