Found out my town's water bill includes a 'storm fee' that's been there since 1992

I was looking through my itemized utility statement last Tuesday because the total jumped $14 and I wanted to see why. Turns out there's a line item called 'storm drainage maintenance' that's been tacked on for over 30 years, and nobody I asked in my neighborhood even knew it existed. I called the city office and the lady said it pays for the culverts near the old mill road, which I never use. How many other hidden fees are we all just paying without checking?

You said nobody even knew the fee existed, but that's on us. The bill lists it plain as day. We just don't read the fine print. Thirty years of people not checking is a long time, but the city isn't hiding it. They send the statement every month. The storm fee pays for stuff that keeps water from flooding your basement and the roads you drive on. You might not use old mill road, but that system connects to everything else. Maybe the real problem is we all got lazy about our own money. Check your bill next time before you blame the office.
