I was asking questions the wrong way for a long time and didn't realize it.

I was trying to get help with a car repair on a forum and just posted 'my car is making a noise, what's wrong?' A mechanic replied, 'What kind of car, what kind of noise, and when does it happen?' I had to go back and check. I was leaving out the basic details that people actually need to give a good answer. Now I try to list the model, the exact sound, and when I hear it before I hit post. Has anyone else had to learn how to ask a better question?

Ever notice how this happens with tech support too? I mean, you call about your phone and just say "it's broken," and they have to pull every single detail out of you. It's like we forget other people can't see the problem in our heads.

Yeah that "pull every single detail" thing is SO real. People just freeze up when they have to explain stuff.

Three weeks ago I spent fifteen minutes on the phone trying to tell my credit card company I lost my wallet. @ryan_stone hit the nail on the head with that tech support comparison because I literally kept saying "my wallet is gone" like they could see through the phone. Idk maybe it's just me but my brain completely empties the second someone asks for the card number or the expiration date. I mean I had it in my hand five hours earlier but somehow my memory turned into static. It's like the pressure of having to explain something perfectly makes you forget the basic stuff you already know. So yeah I feel this one hard just from the other side of the phone.
