Just realized forcing kids to hug relatives does more harm than good

It teaches them their body isn't their own to control. I watched my niece freeze up every time she had to kiss an aunt she barely knew. Why do we still push this?

Why do we get so weird about kids saying no to touch? We tell them to use their words, then get mad when those words are "stop" or "I don't want to." It goes beyond hugs. Forcing a kid to sit through an unwanted tickle attack or get a haircut they hate sends the same bad message. That discomfort trains them to ignore their own gut feeling, which is dangerous stuff later on.

Ugh, this is so true (and what @grantb92 said about ignoring their gut feeling really hits home).

Man, why do we even start doing that to kids?
