My fridge gave up at 2am and the repair guy said something wild

Last Tuesday around 2am I heard this weird clicking from the kitchen, then the hum just stopped. Opened the freezer and everything was already starting to soften, so I grabbed a cooler and hauled what I could into the garage. Called a repair place the next morning and the guy came out, poked around for maybe 10 minutes, then said the compressor was shot and it'd be $700 to fix a 9 year old fridge. He straight up told me to just buy a new one because the parts alone would cost more than the unit is worth. Had to toss about $120 worth of groceries and ended up ordering a basic model for $850 that gets here Friday. Has anyone else had a major appliance die with zero warning like that, and did you fix or replace it in the end?

Yeah but check your home warranty, some cover that even without you knowing it.
