My uncle's 2005 advice about buying used cars finally clicked

Back in 2017, my uncle told me to always check the coolant for oil streaks before buying any used car under $5,000. I thought he was being paranoid, so I skipped it on a 2003 Honda Civic from a guy in Tacoma. Three weeks later the head gasket blew and I was out $1,200 on repairs. Has anyone else ignored older family advice and paid the price for it?

and honestly the oil check thing is only half the story too, you gotta also sniff the coolant, if it smells sweet that's another bad sign. My buddy skipped the test drive on a beater once and the transmission was slipping the whole way home, cost him more than the car itself. Sometimes the old folks are annoying but they learned those tricks from getting burned just like we do.
