The 1 in 3 rule for dying without a will is way higher than I thought
I was digging through the county probate records last Tuesday, just killing time during a slow service call, and spotted the number. Roughly 1 in 3 adults over 45 die without any will or trust. I had to read it twice because I always figured that was a young person problem. My own dad passed 8 years ago with nothing but a savings account in his name, and my sister and I spent 4 months waiting on a court hearing just to split $6,000. Nobody talks about how the state decides your stuff if you don't. Has anyone else pulled their family's probate file and found a mess they had to untangle?
