Hot take: My good telescope vs a cheap one was a total game changer

I spent months using a $60 scope from a department store and got really frustrated with blurry photos of the moon. Last week I borrowed a friend's 8-inch Dobsonian and the difference was insane. That cheap one had a wobbly mount and plastic lenses that just couldn't focus right. With the Dobsonian I could actually see craters and ridges that looked like a photo from a book. It's not even about spending a ton of money, it's about getting something that actually works for what you want. Now I'm saving up for a proper one because I don't want to waste more time on junk gear. Has anyone else made a switch like that and noticed a huge difference in your shots?

Have you ever read about how the difference is mostly in the mount, not just the lenses? I read this article online that said a cheap scope on a wobbly tripod is basically useless, no matter how good the glass is. My buddy had the same problem you did, he finally got a used 6-inch Dobsonian off Craigslist for a hundred bucks and said it changed everything for him. Now he sees bands on Jupiter and the rings on Saturn, stuff he never even knew was possible with his old one. Your mileage may vary, but that cheap mount really does kill the whole experience. Take my advice with a grain of salt though, I'm still learning myself.

fr fr @taylor.betty nailed it. i had the same struggle for months, thought i just had bad luck or bad eyes lol. finally got a solid mount and it was like night and day, could actually see stuff without the whole view shaking every time i breathed near it. feels bad when you waste time on the wrong setup.
