I used to stack 300 phone shots of the moon, now I shoot 20 frames and it looks better
For about two years I was that guy who took 300 phone photos of the moon through my 8 inch dob and stacked every single one in a free program, thinking more frames had to mean more detail. Then a guy at my local club's star party in Phoenix last October watched me do it and asked why I was stacking so many blurry ones, since most of them were just noise and haze. He showed me his laptop and he had only used 20 frames from that same night, but he threw out anything that wasn't tack sharp and only stacked the best ones. I tried it the next clear night and the crater walls came out cleaner than anything I got from my big stacks. The trick was being honest about which shots were actually good instead of just grabbing everything and hoping the software would fix it. Now I cull hard first, sometimes keeping 15 out of 200, and my moon shots don't look like mush anymore. Has anyone else switched from big stacks to only the best frames, or am I late to this?
Wait, 300 frames?? I literally can't imagine sitting there stacking all of those, that sounds like actual torture. The fact that 20 sharp ones beat your whole pile is kind of blowing my mind right now.
