Long exposure finally clicked after I learned the 500 rule in Moab

I've been shooting night skies for a year and always got blurry stars or overexposed shots. Last month in Moab I finally dialed in the 500 rule with my 24mm lens, capping exposure at 20 seconds. The difference was huge, crisp stars instead of streaky lines. What exposure tricks do you use for wide field shots that actually work?
