I finally found a roofer who didn't try to upsell me on a whole new roof

Was up on Bouldercrest last week getting a quote for a small leak near my chimney. Guy climbed up, looked around for 10 minutes, and told me I just needed $40 worth of silicone caulk around the flashing. Has anyone else noticed these young roof crews pushing for full replacements way more than the older guys do?

Man, tell me about it! I had almost the same thing happen over off Memorial Drive last spring. This younger crew comes out, takes one look at my 10 year old comp shingles and starts talking about how the whole deck is probably rotten and I need a $12,000 tear off. I told them to get lost. Called up this old timer my dad used, he spent maybe 20 minutes up there, patched a couple spots with some tar and replaced a few loose nails... cost me like 150 bucks total and it's still holding fine after two hard winters. It's like these new guys don't even know how to fix stuff anymore, they just want to sell you a whole new system. Makes you wonder if the big roofing supply companies are pushing them to push full replacements or something...

But @mason209, isn't it possible that old timer just slapped a bandaid on something that's gonna fail way sooner than a proper fix would? I had a roofer talk me out of patching last year, told me sometimes you're just throwing good money after bad, and three years later my roof is still solid without any leaks.
