I used to think you just needed to spend more money to get a good reading, but your post really changed my mind. I had a similar cheap probe once and it would show the same number no matter if the soil was soaking wet or bone dry. It drove me nuts because I trusted it way too long and ended up overwatering a lot of my plants. Now I just stick my finger in the dirt and feel for moisture, works better every single time. If it's dry an inch down, water it, that's all you really need to know. So yeah, I'm totally with you on ditching the fancy gadgets.
