My 20-year-old water heater finally gave up Tuesday night

I was in the middle of washing dishes and heard this weird gurgling sound from the basement. Next thing I know, there's a puddle spreading across the concrete floor near the Rheem unit we inherited when we bought the house back in 2003. Called up Peachtree Plumbing the next morning and they quoted me $1,200 for a new install. Has anyone else had to deal with an old unit failing like that and did you go with a tankless or stick with the traditional?

Bet that Rheem had some serious sediment buildup after 20 years.

Is 20 years really that crazy for sediment, @elliots49, or is it just what happens when you don't flush it?
