My neighbor in Decatur swears by pine straw, I swear by mulch, and now our front yards look like two different zip codes
So my next door neighbor Dale and I got into it last Saturday over the curb strip between our houses on Ponce de Leon Ave. He's been laying pine straw every spring for 11 years, says it's cheaper and knits together so it won't wash out in a storm. I put down 8 bags of cypress mulch back in March because I like the look and it holds moisture better in July. He came over while I was pulling weeds and goes, 'You're gonna be replacing that every 6 months, watch.' Thing is, he might be right because I've already got bare patches near the mailbox. But his pine straw looks shaggy and blows into my driveway every time we get a hard rain. So now I'm wondering if I should just switch. Pine straw is like $5 a bale down at the place on Lawrenceville Highway, mulch runs me about $4 a bag and I need way more bags. Dale's been doing this since before I moved here and he never seems to redo it as often. Has anyone else flipped from mulch to pine straw or the other way? What actually holds up better through an Atlanta summer?
