TIL that cleaning my AC coils every spring is a waste of time in Atlanta
I always thought you had to hose down the outdoor coils every March like clockwork. Then last month my neighbor Ray, who has done HVAC work around Decatur for 22 years, watched me drag the hose out and just shook his head. He said our pollen season here means the coils get caked again in 2 weeks anyway, so the real fix is trimming back the bushes and checking the drain line instead. He popped my access panel open and showed me the pan was full of algae slime, which was the actual thing choking my system. My power bill dropped $38 last month after I cleared that line. So how often do you folks out in Cobb or Gwinnett actually mess with your coils, and does anyone else get the slime problem?
