Met a guy on a trail near Moab who swore by his 20 year old quad

Was out riding last fall near Poison Spider Mesa. Stopped to help a dude with a stuck winch. He told me his 2004 Polaris Sportsman never needed a single major repair. Just changed the oil and tires. I asked about upgrades and he laughed. Said people waste money on stuff they don't need. Made me think hard about my own mods list. You guys ever meet someone who makes you feel like you are doing it all wrong?

Man, that's exactly what I was thinking @bencampbell. It's wild how easy it is to get sucked into the upgrade trap when the real magic is just having a machine that works and not overthinking it. That Polaris guy sounds like he figured out the secret (ignore all the ads) years ago.

That line about "people waste money on stuff they don't need" really got me. I grew up riding with my dad on his beat up 90s Kawasaki. Thing had zip ties holding the dash together and a milk crate for storage. He'd laugh at guys with $200 LED light bars and skid plates when he never got stuck or rode at night. Bet that old Polaris guy is onto something about how most problems come from trying to upgrade instead of just getting out and using the machine.
