My winch cable froze solid at 6am in Fairbanks and a stranger's trick saved my whole hunt
I parked my quad overnight at a trailhead near Fairbanks and woke up to a winch cable that was basically a frozen coil of steel, which I needed to haul a moose quarter out of a swamp 2 miles in. A guy from North Pole walked over, poured half a thermos of hot water down the fairlead and let it sit 10 minutes, then it spooled out like nothing. Does anyone else carry a thermos just for thawing gear, or am I the only one who never thought of that?
Meanwhile I'm over here feeling like a genius because I remembered to put my gloves on the dashboard defroster. Half a thermos of hot water down the fairlead is such a simple fix that I'm kinda mad I never came up with it myself. My dumb trick has always been breathing on stuff like that does anything when it's ten below. Gonna start keeping a thermos in the quad just for this from now on. That guy from North Pole deserves a beer for sure.
