Old school winching vs. new synthetic rope, which way are you guys going?
I started out in the 90s with steel cable and a manual crank on a Yamaha Moto-4. Now I run synthetic line on a Warn winch, and installing a new fairlead last week took me maybe 20 minutes compared to the old days of fighting sharp frays. The synthetic is lighter and safer, but I still miss how steel handled dragging over rocks without worrying about chafing through a $200 rope. My buddy in Salem swears by cable for tree work, while I keep a sleeve on the rope for every pull. Are you sticking with what you know or did something push you to switch over? What was the breaking point for you?
