PSA: Stop calling every ATV a four-wheeler if it isn't...

I was out at the trails near Payson last Saturday and heard some guy point at a side-by-side and call it a four-wheeler. That's just wrong... a four-wheeler is a quad, you know, the one you straddle. A side-by-side is totally different, they have steering wheels and seats next to each other. It drives me crazy because then people get confused about what parts fit what. I literally had to explain to my friend that his Can-Am Commander is not a four-wheeler three times before he got it. Has anyone else run into this mix-up out on the trails?

85% of the people I ride with call everything with four wheels a four-wheeler, and honestly @elliots49, I don't see the big deal. My buddy Dave has a RZR and he calls it his four-wheeler all day long, nobody at the shop hesitates when he asks for parts. I think we're making it way harder than it needs to be by policing slang that's been around for decades. If someone tried to slap a quad rack on a side-by-side that's on them for not measuring twice, not the words they used.

Three times?! Man, I can't get over that your friend needed THREE explanations about his Commander not being a four-wheeler. That's like calling a pickup truck a "car" and insisting it's the same thing. I saw a guy last month at the Cinders riding area try to put a quad rack on his RZR and got PISSED when it didn't bolt up. He was screaming at the shop about false advertising when the problem was he couldn't tell the difference between a utility ATV and a side-by-side. Honestly, it's basic stuff - if it has a steering wheel and you sit next to someone, it ain't a four-wheeler. Period. We need to start calling these people out on the spot or we'll have guys trying to put car tires on their quads next.
