The winch cable spool that ate my whole Saturday morning

I was out near Redmond last weekend and my winch cable got tangled something fierce. I figured it was a quick fix, maybe 20 minutes to unspool and respool it by hand. Nope, took me almost 4 hours because the cable had wrapped around itself in three layers under the drum. Every time I thought I had it loose, another loop snagged deeper. I finally had to pull the whole winch off the mount and take the drum apart in my driveway. The manual said nothing about this kind of mess, and the YouTube video I found was for a different model. Has anyone else had to completely disassemble a winch just to fix a bad spool, or is there some trick I'm missing?
