Almost Used Cheap Clear Coat On A Black Civic And Dodged A Mess
Last Thursday I had to decide between a $60 quick clear from the parts store or the $180 two-part I usually run on black jobs, and I went with the cheap stuff since the customer was paying cash and wanted it back fast. It sprayed out fine and looked wet and shiny for about two days, then the next morning it was hazy and dull with a rough feel, and I had to sand the whole hood back down and eat the cost of a redo. What do you all do when a customer brings a cheap paint job and pressures you to cut corners on materials?
Had a guy last summer with a beat up Corolla who swore the $40 single stage from the swap meet was the same stuff we use. Told him the sun would eat it alive but he didn't want to hear it so I sprayed it anyway with a note on the ticket that it was his call. Six weeks later he comes back with chalky pink paint where red used to be and acts like I did it to him. Now I just tell them straight up, cheap materials mean I can't stand behind the work, and if that's a problem they can find someone else.
