PSA: Overheard a guy at the paint supply counter say 'just scuff and shoot' for a quarter panel with a deep dent
He was telling his buddy to skip the filler and just sand over the damage before priming. I was grabbing some clearcoat and it made me stop. In my experience, that kind of shortcut always shows up later, usually as a ghost dent or cracking after a season. It might save an hour now, but it'll cost the customer their satisfaction and your reputation later. Has anyone else had to fix a 'scuff and shoot' job that came back to bite the original shop?

Yeah, "ghost dent" is exactly what happens. I had to redo a hood where the original guy just sanded over a small crease, and after six months you could see the outline clear as day. It's never worth skipping the proper metal work.

Reminds me of a time I saw a cook try to skip deglazing a pan. It looked fine when it left the kitchen, but the whole dish tasted flat. Same idea as robert275's ghost dent, just a different kind of shortcut.
