That quote about 'slow is smooth' finally clicked for me
An old timer at the shop said it while I was fighting a quarter panel, so I slowed down my weld pattern and the warping just stopped, has anyone else had that sink in mid-job?

Ha, yeah, that feeling is like a switch flipping. I had something similar happen years ago with a table saw, not welding, but the idea was the same. I was rushing through a bunch of dados and kept getting tear-out, so I slammed the pace down to almost half speed and just let the blade do the work. It was like the wood finally heard me, everything came out clean. I still talk to my tools more than most people, but it works. Saves me from buying new blades or sanding for an hour after, so I'll take it.
