Lost $180 on a cheap scan tool that lied to me

Bought one of those $180 all-in-one scan tools from a parts store back in March, and it told me my 2008 F150 had a bad crank sensor. Swapped it out, then the MAF, then chased the wiring for 11 hours before a buddy brought his real scanner and found it was just a weak ground at the block. Has anyone else gotten burned by budget tools that show wrong codes, or is there a decent middle-ground option under $400?
