My neighbor Bob told me to use brake fluid to loosen stuck bolts and boy was he wrong

Bob is this old guy down the street who's fixed everything from lawnmowers to tractors so I figured he knew his stuff. I tried his trick on a rusted exhaust manifold bolt on my '98 F-150 and it started smoking and ate through the rubber grommet next to it. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from a neighbor that made more of a mess than it solved?

...and that's exactly how I learned that WD-40 is not a substitute for penetrating oil. Bob sounds like the kind of guy who thinks if it worked on a 1960's Ford tractor it's good for any modern car. I had a neighbor once tell me to use a hammer and a punch to free up a stuck brake caliper piston. Not a brass punch, not a wood block, just a regular steel punch straight on the piston. Yeah, I ended up buying a whole new caliper and a new rotor because I gouged the piston face so bad it wouldn't seal. Did your Bob ever admit he was wrong about the brake fluid or did he double down and say you must have done it wrong?

Whew, wait, you actually gouged the piston with a plain steel punch @leor37?
