Remembering old Hank at Miller's Garage back in 2012

I worked at Miller's Garage in Toledo for a summer and this older mechanic Hank showed me how to listen for a bad rod bearing by putting a screwdriver to the valve cover. He said 'kid, your ears are worth more than any scan tool.' I still use that trick at least twice a month. Anyone else got a tip from an old timer that stuck with you?

Did Hank teach you how to tell a wrist pin from a rod knock too?

The thing nobody's bringing up is how these old tricks actually keep you safer than digital diagnostics sometimes. A scan tool can tell you what code is popping but it won't warn you about a loose fan belt about to slice your hand open, you know? Hank's method gets you tuned into the whole mechanical symphony (or cacophony) under the hood instead of staring at a screen. Plus it builds instinct over time, like learning a second language for engines. That screwdriver trick is basically the mechanic version of a stethoscope and no computer can replace that.
