The senior tech at my shop told me to stop torquing lug nuts by feel 6 months ago and I fought him on it until a wheel nearly came off a customer's car on the highway
He said I was overtorquing everything by at least 30 ft-lbs and I argued that 20 years of experience was better than a torque wrench, but after that close call I started using one every time and now I actually get fewer comebacks for warped rotors has anyone else had to eat crow after ignoring old-school advice?

Wait, you actually had a wheel almost come off on a highway? That's insane, man. I mean I've heard stories but that's the kind of thing that makes you pull over and just sit there for a minute. I can't believe you were fighting with the senior guy that hard over it. I guess 20 years of experience is hard to argue with but almost losing a wheel is a pretty big wake up call. Good on you for changing your ways though, that's more than a lot of guys would do.
