Paid $380 for a broker who just reposted my car on a site I could have used free

I shipped my Subaru from Phoenix to Portland last month and handed a broker $380 before I knew any better. He promised a "dedicated carrier" and a firm pickup date, then three days later I saw my own listing on a load board, word for word, with a phone number I did not recognize. The car did arrive fine, but I found out later that the load boards are free to browse and I could have called a carrier myself. Has anyone worked directly with a trucker and skipped the middleman, and how did you pick one you trusted?
