Appreciation post: my $240 Harbor Freight welder taught me more in 3 months than my $900 Lincoln did in 2 years
I know everybody says buy once cry once, and I believed that for a long time. But down in my garage in Tucson, the cheap flux core rig forced me to learn settings by feel, since the chart on the door was straight up fiction, and my beads got cleaner in 3 months than they ever did on the fancy machine with all its auto modes. Anybody else think the cheap tool that fights you a little ends up making you better?

The "auto modes" thing is a bit off, those fancy machines still make you dial in wire speed and voltage yourself, they just add stuff like hot start on top. What actually made you better was welding more often and paying attention to each bead, which the cheap rig forced you to do because you couldn't just trust the settings. So yeah, the tool mattered less than the reps.
