I thought magnetic parts trays were a gimmick until I dropped a 10mm bolt into my engine bay
Last Tuesday I was swapping the valve cover gasket on my 2004 Civic in the driveway and dropped a 10mm bolt straight into the timing cover area. I spent 25 minutes with a flashlight and a magnet wand fishing around while my neighbor watched from his porch. I finally gave up and bought a $12 magnetic tray at the parts store on the corner. The next day it caught every bolt I set down, and the job took half the time. Anyone got a trick for grabbing a bolt that already fell somewhere dumb?
A buddy of mine lost a nut down in his intake manifold once and ended up taping a magnet to the end of a bent coat hanger to reach it. Worked better than the fancy wand he had. If the bolt landed somewhere magnetic can't get, sometimes you just gotta pull the part and shake it out.
