My 2003 F150 starter gave up at a gas station in Knoxville at 11pm
I was just trying to get gas and head home from visiting my sister when the starter made this horrible grinding noise and then nothing. Dead quiet. Had to have a buddy with a trailer come get me from the Circle K on Kingston Pike. Ended up replacing it in his driveway the next morning with a $68 reman unit from NAPA, and honestly it went in easier than I expected. Has anyone else had that specific year of truck eat starters faster than normal?

You sure it's the truck eating them or just bad luck with cheap parts? Those NAPA remans are hit or miss, had one crap out in six months on my buddy's '04.

Oh come on @brian_ward55, you really think a few alternators is some kind of curse? I've burned through three on my old F150 and it's just normal wear and tear on a truck that's got 200k miles. These things get hot, dusty under the hood, and they just die. Plus half these remans are rebuilt with junk parts anyway, so you're rolling the dice every time. Your buddy's '04 crapping out at six months sounds like a bad batch, not the truck being some kind of alternator eating monster.
