Stopped by a Harbor Freight parking lot in Fresno and half the trucks had the same DIY bed rack
Was in Fresno last Saturday picking up a set of impact sockets and walked the lot for maybe 10 minutes. Counted 6 pickups with angle iron bed racks bolted together, most of them with the same 3/8 hardware and rattle can black paint. It was like everybody watched the same build video and skipped the welding part. Curious if you all think those bolted racks actually hold up to a loaded cooler bouncing around on I-5, or if the bolts start walking after a few months.
Man, a buddy of mine built one of those bolted racks for his Tacoma and it was fine for a few months until he loaded a big Yeti and a propane tank for a camping trip. Somewhere around Los Banos on I-5 he heard a clunk and looked back to see the whole rack leaning hard to one side. Turns out two of the bolts had backed out and the angle iron had wallowed out the holes so bad they were twice the size. He limped it home with a ratchet strap and ended up welding it later that summer. Lock nuts and washers help some but that thin angle iron just can't take the vibration forever. Six of them in one lot is crazy, that video must have a million views.
