Am I the only one who got schooled by a new hire on a basic principle?

A kid fresh out of A&P school asked me 'why do we even bother with the 100-hour checks if the MEL says it's okay?' and it made me realize I'd stopped explaining the 'why' behind the rules. How do you guys make sure you're not just going through the motions?

Honestly, I started asking myself "why" before each task to stay sharp.

My old foreman used to say if you can't explain the why to a trainee, you're just a parts changer. Hits different when you're the one getting asked.

But what if the trainee just won't listen?

Tell that to my last boss, seana14. He couldn't explain why we needed lunch breaks. What's the worst "parts changer" logic you've heard?
