Ground loop hum after a rewiring job, or is it just me?

I chased a ground loop hum for two days on a G1000 install in a Cherokee down in Tucson, rewired the whole audio panel and still heard it. Turned out it was the strobe power supply feeding back through the shielding, not the grounds at all, and I had it backwards the whole time. Anyone else found the unexpected source winning over the obvious fix, or do you always trust the textbook first?
