Old timer at the Anchorage hangar told me to always bench test a Garmin G1000 display before install, even if it's new out of the box.

I thought it was a waste of time, but last week I pulled a brand new unit that failed on the bench. Saved me from a huge headache after the panel was buttoned up. Do you guys always do a full bench check on new avionics, or do you trust the factory seal?

My A&P instructor called that the "no surprises" rule for a reason.

But is it really that big a deal? People forget stuff all the time, it's just a normal part of life. Calling it a "rule" makes it sound way more serious than it is.

parker911 I get what you're saying, but @dylans58 had it right with that "no surprises" rule. My old chemistry teacher drilled that into us too, and honestly it saved my grade. I started writing down EVERYTHING I'd forget - due dates, little lab steps, even when to bring goggles. It sounds like a lot at first, but after a couple weeks it just became a habit and I stopped stressing about missing stuff.
