A guy at the REI in Denver said he plans routes around water sources, not miles, and it changed how I look at the CT
I ran into this older hiker at the REI in Denver last weekend while I was grabbing fuel canisters for the Colorado Trail. He said he stopped planning routes by daily mileage a while back and instead plans around reliable water, especially on dry stretches like the Cochetopa Hills and segments 3 through 5. He told me he'd rather do 12 miles to a good creek than push 20 to a dry camp, even if it means a shorter day. I did the math on my last trip and realized I was hauling 4 liters for no reason on sections where water was everywhere. Now I'm wondering if I should just replan my whole San Juan segment around sources instead of the guidebook's suggested camps. Has anyone else ditched the mileage plan for a water plan on a long thru hike, and did it actually make the days easier or just mess with your schedule?
