Appreciation post: the Smokies put a fake fire tower on my map app and I hiked 3 miles for a view of nothing
So last October I did a 4 day loop out of Newfound Gap in the Smokies, right, and my map app showed this little fire tower icon about 3 miles off the Appalachian Trail near Mount Cammerer. I hauled myself up there with a full pack, legs burning, thinking I was gonna get this killer 360 view for lunch. Get to the spot and there's no tower. Just a flat clearing with an old concrete footing and a whole lot of trees blocking everything. Some guy coming down the other way told me the tower got taken down years ago and the app never updated. I sat on that concrete slab and ate my peanut butter tortilla staring at branches. Honestly it was kind of peaceful but I felt like a dummy for planning my whole day around it. So now I always cross check any landmark on my map against a paper map or a recent trail report before I bank on it. Has anyone else gotten burned by an outdated icon on their route planning app, and which ones do you trust?

Seems like every app out there is just a snapshot of the world at some random moment, and the real world keeps changing while the map sits there frozen. I've seen it with restaurants that closed two years ago still showing as open, and trail markers that moved after a reroute. The fix is simple, just treat your phone map like a tip from a stranger and not the final word.
