Everyone says the John Muir Trail is perfect, but I had a different experience near Evolution Lake

Last August, about 30 miles in near Evolution Lake, I got turned around in a whiteout that came out of nowhere. I was following the standard Guthook route, but the cairns just vanished under the snow. Instead of pushing on, I set up my tent right there on a flat rock, waited out the storm for 6 hours, and used my paper map to backtrack to the last clear junction when it lifted. It wasn't a failure, it was just the route telling me to stop for a bit. Has anyone else had to bail on a famous section because the conditions changed too fast?

Always pushed through before, but your story changed my mind.

That story must have been pretty intense to change a lifelong habit. Most people just get a bit tired and keep going. I doubt one post should flip your whole routine.

Smart call to stop and wait it out.
