Got caught in a hailstorm on the Highline Trail in Glacier and had to bail at 11pm
So last August I was doing the Highline Trail in Glacier, the full 15 mile stretch from Logan Pass to the Loop. About mile 9 near Granite Park Chalet the sky just opened up, marble sized hail coming sideways. I had my rain shell but my map was getting soaked and I couldn't see more than 20 feet ahead. I remembered reading on some forum that the chalit has an emergency room so I just booked it there and waited out the worst of it with 4 other hikers who had the same idea. Ended up hiking the last 6 miles by headlamp which was sketchy as hell on those switchbacks down to the Loop. Made it to my car at 1am, completely wrecked but alive. Anyone else have a route where you had to completely change plans mid hike because of weather? I'm doing the Teton Crest Trail next month and trying to figure out how much buffer time to build in.
