Hot take: I used to plan my trips around the highest peaks, but a ranger in the Smokies told me about a low-elevation loop that's way better.

I was dead set on bagging Mount LeConte last spring, but a park ranger at the Sugarlands center suggested the 8-mile Middle Prong Trail instead, saying it followed an old railroad grade with tons of waterfalls. I tried it and spent a whole day not gasping for air, just enjoying the sound of the river and the history. Anyone have a favorite 'easy' route that surprised them with how good it was?

Honestly, that's a good life lesson in general. We get so focused on the big, obvious goals that we miss the good stuff right in front of us.

That story about the railroad grade sounds pretty cool.

Wait, is that the same thing as the railroad grade or something different? Honestly I'm getting confused with all these terms.

Did @spencerw72 mean the old railroad bed trail instead of the railroad grade?
