Update: I switched from the JMT to the High Sierra Trail and I'm not looking back
I had my permits all set for the John Muir Trail starting at Happy Isles in August, but a buddy who did the High Sierra Trail back in 2021 kept talking it up. After staring at elevation profiles for two nights straight, I dropped the JMT and grabbed a permit out of Crescent Meadow instead. The crossing at Wallace Creek and the climb up to Kaweah Gap sold me, way fewer people and the views over Big Arroyo hit different. Anyone else bail on a big name thru hike for something shorter and quieter? Curious how it went for you.
