Vent: my water filter quit on night 2 of the Rawah loop and I boiled creek water in a tin cup
So I did the Rawah loop up in Colorado last month, 27 miles over 4 days, and on night 2 my squeeze filter just stopped pushing water through. No warning, no crack I could see, it just locked up like it was clogged with cement. I was 11 miles from the trailhead with a half liter left and a long climb ahead of me, so I did the dumb thing and drank straight from the creek for the rest of the trip. Got lucky and never got sick, but I spent two nights boiling water in my little tin cup over my stove, which ate up so much fuel I had to ration it. Honestly the boiled water tasted better than the filtered stuff anyway. Now I'm second guessing whether I even need to carry a filter on trips where there's good water everywhere. What do you all do when a filter dies mid trip, do you bail out or just roll the dice on the water?
Was the filter actually clogged or did the o ring fail and let crap into the cartridge? I ask because mine locked up once and it turned out a tiny crack in the housing was pulling in sediment every time I pumped. That would explain why boiling worked fine, it kills everything regardless of how nasty the source is. How far were you from the next reliable water source when it died, like was it a dry stretch or were you crossing creeks every mile? And did you ever figure out what went wrong after you got home, or is the filter still sitting in a drawer somewhere?
