I used to draw with a full pencil set and now I just scribble with a dying ballpoint at 2am
Two years ago I was all about shading and blending with my nice graphite pencils, spending like 45 minutes on a single eye, trying to make it look like a photo. Now I get home from my shift at the diner around 11:30, sit on the floor with a notebook, and just start dragging a cheap Bic that's almost out of ink across the page until something weird appears. Last Tuesday I drew this blob with tentacles and three mouths that sort of looks like my old manager, and I laughed so hard I almost woke up my roommate. The thing is, those careful drawings never felt like mine, they were just me copying stuff. The 2am garbage is actually fun and I don't care if it's ugly. I keep every single one in a shoebox now, even the ones where the pen dies halfway and it just turns into a scratchy mess. Am I the only one who switched to worse supplies on purpose because it freed something up?
A buddy of mine did the same thing with painting, ditched his fancy brushes for cheap kids' watercolors and never looked back. He says the bad supplies make his hand move faster than his brain can judge, which is where the good stuff lives.
