Dropped $12 on a used road atlas at a yard sale in Ohio and it beat my phone GPS twice on the same trip
I grabbed this 2009 Rand McNally atlas for twelve bucks in Columbus mostly as a joke, but then my phone lost signal in the hills near Wheeling and that paper thing got me out. Two days later the app tried routing me onto a road that has not had a bridge since like 2015, and the atlas had the dang bridge marked anyway. The part that bugs me is you cannot laugh at a bad map if you never look at one, so now I keep the atlas under the seat just to spot stuff like that. What is the worst outdated road you have hit because your phone swore it was still open?
Man, that bridge thing is the part that gets me, because the map companies actually remove stuff when they update, so your atlas might be more honest than the app in some weird way. I had the same deal in rural Kentucky where my phone kept telling me to turn onto a road that was just a gravel washout with a gate across it, and three different cars were pulled over doing the same confused loop. What kills me is the app still shows that road in blue like it is a real route, so you trust it right up until you are staring at a locked gate.
