Fixing one wrong label on a trail map cost me a whole Saturday, so who should really get the blame?
Hiked the Eagle Ridge loop near Asheville on Saturday and the map had a trailhead marked 'easy 1.5 mile family loop' right where a steep 4 mile climb splits off. Took me about 6 hours total because I followed the wrong line, backtracked twice, and ran out of water around mile 3. Side one of this debate says the mapmaker is at fault, since a mislabeled junction is a straight up safety problem. Side two says I should have cross checked with the posted signs at the trailhead and not trusted a single sheet of paper. I get both sides, but a map that sends you up the wrong mountain is worse than no map at all. What's your cutoff for bailing on a map and just trusting the signs?
