My buddy changed my mind about those fantasy world maps

I used to always laugh at those fantasy maps where rivers split or mountains make no sense, but my friend Dave who runs a D&D campaign set me straight last week. He showed me this map he made for his game where a river goes from the ocean inland to a lake and I was like dude that's not how water works lol. He explained that in his world a wizard cursed the river to flow backwards centuries ago and it's part of the lore now. I realized these maps aren't trying to be real geography, they're telling a story or making a joke. Now I kinda appreciate the bad ones more instead of just roasting them. Anyone else ever had a conversation that made you stop hating on a bad map?

Dave's 200-year-old backwards river curse ended up making not a bit of sense when he tried to explain why the water didn't just dry up or flood everything. A wizard's curse doesn't fix basic physics, it just papers over it with a lazy excuse.

Dave's a good guy" but tell him to slap a flood barrier on that map and move on.
