Appreciation post: a 1949 issue of Popular Mechanics said computers would weigh 1.5 tons by 2000
I used to roll my eyes at old prediction posts, but last week I found a scanned copy of the March 1949 issue of Popular Mechanics on the Internet Archive, and it said future computers might only need 1.5 tons of vacuum tubes. I always figured these goofy guesses were just made up for fun, but seeing the actual page with my own eyes changed my mind. It also said home computers were unlikely because nobody could afford that much equipment in a house. Here we are with a phone in my pocket that weighs 6 ounces and cost less than one of those tube racks. Somebody in 1949 was doing real math and still landed miles off. What old magazine or news clip made you stop and actually say 'wow, they had no idea'?
