My cousin in 2011 swore tablets would kill desktops, so I built my PC anyway

Back in 2011 my cousin told me to skip building a desktop because iPads were going to replace everything. I spent $900 on parts anyway for gaming and video editing. That tower still runs fine today with a new SSD, while he's on his third tablet because they keep slowing down. Anyone else get bad advice from relatives about hardware that ended up being totally backwards?
