That $30 'lifetime license' for software that died 6 months later
I bought a PDF tool in 2022 from some small dev shop because they promised a one time fee and no subscription. Cost me $30 and it worked fine until they shut down the activation server in early 2023 with no warning. Now the program just gives an error and won't open. Has anyone else gotten burned by those too good to be true lifetime deals?

Yeah that's EXACTLY how I used to look at it too. I used to think "well, it's only $30, not the end of the world" and I'd just move on. But then I bought a lifetime key for a backup tool called CloudSync Pro for $40 last year and the company got acquired three months later. The new owners killed the old software completely and offered a "loyalty discount" on their new subscription product instead. That REALLY changed my mind because it wasn't about the money anymore - it was about building your workflow around something that can just vanish. Now I tell myself if I'm gonna depend on a piece of software, I need to know if it works fully offline or if there's at least a community that'll keep it alive.

I bought a lifetime license for a video editor called AnimStudio back in 2021 for about $40. It was a small company and they seemed legit. Six months later they just disappeared. The website went offline and the software stopped verifying licenses. I was SO mad. What worked for me was finding out about the issue on Reddit. Some guy posted a patched .exe file that bypassed the activation check completely. I guess it's technically a cracked version but since I already paid for it I didn't feel bad. I still use that software today and it works fine offline. So maybe try searching for a community fix or a workaround instead of just giving up.
