Unpopular opinion: my 2011 netbook is still more useful than the tablet everyone swore would replace laptops
Found my old Acer netbook from 2011 in a box last month and charged it up expecting a paperweight. Back then every tech blog in 2012 said tablets would kill laptops by 2015, and I totally bought it. Fast forward to now, that little netbook still runs a full desktop browser for my eBay listings, while the 2019 tablet I replaced it with can't even open two tabs without choking. Cost me $250 back then versus $400 for the tablet, and the netbook is the one that survived. Anyone else keep old gear around that outlasted the stuff that was supposed to replace it?
Doubt the netbook is really the winner here, it just had a different job. Tablets were never meant to replace a full laptop for stuff like listing on eBay, they were meant for couch use and watching videos, so of course yours felt useless when you tried to do desktop work on it. My old tablet from that era still plays movies and reads comics fine, which is all I ever asked it to do. What actually killed the tablet was apps dropping support and no updates, not the hardware itself, same way your netbook is stuck on an old browser that sites are slowly blocking. You got lucky that your one task still works, but that's a small win, not proof the whole prediction was wrong.
